1. Soo, Mich. film festival announces its selection for 2026 (sootoday.com subscription) — Sault Ste. Marie residents can catch the 2026 Soo Film Festival Sept. 16–20 at Bayliss Public Library and, for the first time, the LSSU Arts Center. The event will showcase Great Lakes-focused and international films, with free screenings at the library and ticketed blocks and passes at LSSU, plus a full schedule and ticket details coming soon online.
   

2. Longtime Sault Ste. Marie shop owner Gerda Frimberger announces retirement (9and10news.com) — A beloved downtown Sault Ste. Marie clothing shop, Casual Lifestyles, will close at the end of this year as longtime owner Gerda Frimberger retires after more than four decades in business. Frimberger, a German immigrant and Holocaust survivor, reflects on building her store from scratch, dressing generations of local women, and the friendships that have become her chosen family in the Sault.
   

3. Rot like a 'decaying animal': Murderer told where to go by victim's family (sootoday.com) — Family members of Taylor Marshall, killed in 2023, delivered searing victim impact statements in court as a judge weighs sentencing for Steven Jones, whose movements began at the Sault Ste. Marie border plaza. Prosecutors and defence jointly recommend life with no parole for 15 years, and loved ones vow to oppose his release at every future hearing.
   

4. The robots kids build to preserve Native American languages (optimistdaily.com) — A student at JKL Bahweting Anishinaabe School in Sault Ste. Marie is helping build talking “SkoBot” robots to keep the Anishinaabemowin language alive. Working with nonprofit founder and Sault Ste. Marie Tribe member Danielle Boyer, local kids program the robots with their own voices, turning language lessons, culture, and coding into something fun they can share with family.
   

5. Michigan Tech women's basketball releases 2026-27 schedule (uppermichiganssource.com) — Michigan Tech’s women’s basketball team will visit Sault Ste. Marie on February 4 for a GLIAC matchup against Lake Superior State, giving local fans a chance to see the Huskies in person. The newly released 2026‑27 schedule features a busy slate of conference and non‑conference games across the Midwest under first‑year head coach Eric Gruber.
