10 College Scholarships = 1 Stellar Ike Girls Soccer Team

Eisenhower girls soccer team reports 10 soccer scholarships were awarded prior to the 2011 season.

announced Monday that 10 members of the girls soccer team have signed letters of intent to continue their soccer and scholastic careers at the collegiate level.

For clarification purposes, we are talking about 10 young ladies that already have college soccer scholarships but have yet to play their senior season for the Eagles, as girls high school soccer is in the spring.Β

Yes, they are that good.Β

The athletes were on hand with some of their parents as well as Principal Nanette Chesney, Assistant Principal Ken Cucchi, athletic director Chris Corteg and girls soccer coach Mehrdad Nekoogar to formalize the announcement at the school on Monday.

"It's exciting to report that these ten young ladies represent over $100,000 in scholarships and it's only February," Corteg said. "This is exceptional. Last year we had six or seven earn scholarships and this year it's 10. We are proud of these great student athletes."
Β
"I'm very impressed that we have so many outstanding players on one team," Chesney said. "We are proud of them." Β

The recipients and their university/college of choice are as follows:

  • Megan Marsack - Michigan State University
  • Monika Lee - Loyola University
  • Maria Toth - Morehead State University
  • Aubrey Sudomier - Western Michigan University
  • Brittany Domin - Western Michigan University
  • Alyson Brady - Western Michigan University
  • Rachael Eklund - Schoolcraft College
  • Taylor DiCicco - Ferris State University
  • Alyssa Lolito - University of Detroit Mercy
  • Anna Vess - Eastern Michigan University

"Obviously, I'm very excited for the girls," Nekoogar said. "Eisenhower always has a successful program and it makes me proud when I came here and saw all of the smiles on the girls' faces. This has been their goal since they were kids and they were able to accomplish it."

The Eagles finished last season with a 14-3-1 record and won the districts. This year, in addition to the 10 scholarship recipients, the team also has three junior standouts that are currently receiving collegiate attention.

All this makes for a promising spring season for Ike.

"On paper it looks awfully good," Corteg said. "All the ingredients are there. We have a good coach and a lot of talent. We just need to keep them healthy."Β

When asked if a state championship is a possibility, Coach Nekoogar responded with a resounding "absolutely."

"It's my job and goal to give them what they are dreaming forβ€”a state championship," Nekoogar said. "I think we have a chance at it as we are just as good as any team out there. We need to stay health and focused. If we can do those two things, we have just as good of a chance as anyone in the state."
