Baker College of Clinton Township revamps administrative professional program

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Baker College of Clinton Township has given its administrative professional program a transformation to better align with the duties of modern-day employment opportunities.

Although commonly associated with routine clerical support and a belief that the positions are altogether disappearing, today’s administrative professionals handle complex business functions and a great deal of responsibility in a field that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects will grow 12 percent between 2012 and 2022.

“This business-driven program has been tailored to better meet the needs of employers in the current competitive work environment,” said Donald R. Torline, Baker College of Clinton Township president. “Much more is required of administrative professionals today. They may be involved in project management, working with integrated computer software applications, or organizing and overseeing top management schedules and events. Our updated curriculum reflects these broad areas of involvement.”

The Baker College administrative professional associate degree program prepares students with necessary skills in project management, accounting, organization and scheduling, internet/intranet communications and research, document preparation, customer service and public relations.

The new curriculum incudes more program-specific classes and fewer general business classes. Classes that have been added to the program requirements include workplace technology, workplace management, business communication and intermediate spreadsheets.

The Baker College program is designed for those who wish to enter the administrative support field, as well as for those already employed who want additional training. Enrollment is open for fall quarter with classes beginning Monday, Sept. 29.

Torline said that Baker College routinely evaluates its programs to ensure graduates are provided the necessary training and education to meet employers’ demands.
