Ike students learn about rhythm, rehearsals and all that jazz

It was a fusion of jazz bands from Wayne State University and Eisenhower.

Wayne State University professor Christopher Collins recently brought students from his college-level program to Ike to provide insight into what makes Jazz cook.

After hearing three songs from the Eisenhower jazz band, Collins told students they "have a nice sound going on" and to keep their focus on perfecting rhythm.

"It's all about the feel," he said. "That's where this music was born from."

Collins, a renowned jazz woodwind player, said that having higher level students helps create a new generation of players. He encouraged students to begin working their junior high counterparts.

"Jazz has always been about mentors passing on knowledge," he said. "Believe it or not, you have a generation under you that takes cues from you."

He also stressed the importance of constant practicing with their instruments and being prepared for rehearsals.

Eisenhower music teacher Chris Traskal said the experience of meeting Wayne State jazz students and professor Collins shows students that there is a world of music beyond the school auditorium.

"It's a real world experience," he said. "It's like having a doctor come into a science classroom."
