UCS Honors Choir gets in tune for new school year

Representatives from each UCS elementary school prepare for December concert

The Utica Community Schools Honors Choir spent one of the last days of their
summer vacation getting in tune for the new year.

The 75-member choir, comprised of fifth and sixth grade students from each
elementary school, held their first ever camp to prepare for their annual
concert this December.

"I just enjoy singing so this has been a lot of fun," said fifth-grade
Jessica Wehling, of Plumbrook Elementary.  "I learned a lot of stuff today I
didn't know before."

Members of the Honors Choir are recommended by their music teachers. Students audition in front of UCS music teachers before they are selected for the group.

The group meets weekly to practice the songs and the accompanying
choreography. The day-long camp on August 23 introduced their ten songs set to
the students.

"This is the first time we have had a full day summer camp and it has been
going great," said Susan Rosso, music teacher and Co-Chair K-12 Performing Arts
Department.  She co-directs the choir with music teachers Jessica Nicol, Sara
Leto, and Charlene Sonnenberg.

The Honor Choir students  are preparing for their 2012-2013 show - "A Season
of Song" - scheduled for 7 p.m. on December 11 at Henry Ford II High School.

Admission is free.

The group also performs at the UCS Show Choir Extravaganza.

Students participating camp in the camp said they were looking forward to
participating in the practices and performances in the new school year.

"I really like singing," said fifth-grader Colin Lotocki, of Graebner
Elementary. "My favorite music is from the '80s. I really like all of the
original songs."
