Eisenhower choir takes title at national music festival

Eisenhower High School choir students have earned the top honor at a national music festival.

The 61 vocal music students from all three Eisenhower choirs earned the "Gold Mickey" and superior ratings at the May 2 Festival Disney in Florida.

Students beat out 15 other U.S. choirs for the award, which was presented by professors of choral music from Furman University, The University of North Carolina Greensboro, and Barry University in Miami.

"They were very impressed with the group's attention to detail, musicality, energy, and vocal freedom," said Eisenhower vocal music director Julia Jenkins Holt.

The group was required to sing three songs for the competition. Eisenhower students performed two 15th century pieces - "This Day We Sing Together" and "Non Nobis, Domine," as well as "Carry Me Home" which combines African-American spirituals “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” and “Deep River.”

In addition to the "Gold Mickey," the choir received a Superior rating. The choir received an average score of 95.3/100 and had the highest average score of any choir in all other competitive styles.

The choir's next performance is the Spring Concert - A Taste of Country - on May 19 and 20 at 7pm in the EHS Performing Arts Center, 6500 25 Mile Rd. Tickets can be purchased at showtix4u.com or at the box office.
