English Language students from Utica and Stevenson high schools were recently given a glimpse of their future at a Macomb County Naturalization Ceremony.
Students participated in the October 10 ceremony as a culminating activity from the Citizenship Counts program, a nonprofit organization committed to educating middle and high school students on the tenets of citizenship.
"This will definitely be a day our UCS EL students will remember as they look forward to the day that they too can become a citizen of this great country," said EL Teacher Mary Tangalos.
The Citizenship Counts program provides lessons that allow students to appreciate their rights and responsibilities as Americans.
At the ceremony, EL students served as greeters and ushers.
Stevenson junior and former EL student Angela Joseph shared a moving performance of the National Anthem and students from several districts recited The Pledge of Allegiance.
After the Honorable R. Steven Whalen administered the official oath and certificates were distributed, UCS students concluded the ceremony with flags in hand by singing Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the USA.
