“When her car was destroyed, she lost her job. When you lose a job, you can lose a home. She needs help now.” – Helen Hicks, Macomb County Habitat for Humanity

“It was the same call from family number two,” she said. “Finally, the last family who contacted us lost their car, all of the furniture in their basement, their furnace, hot water tank, washer and dryer.”

In response, the agency has established the Family Flood Fund with Talmer Bank. Hicks, who seeded the fund with a personal gifts, said Habitat staff and board members are hopeful community members will step forward and help the families continue on their path to home ownership and self-sufficiency.

As partners, they worked alongside volunteers to achieve home ownership.

“I’m particularly worried about the third family,” Hicks said. “When her car was destroyed, she lost her job. When you lose a job, you can lose a home. She needs help now.”
