The Green program honors schools that participate in up to 20 environmental and energy savings activities.

The Green School effort has been embraced by schools in UCS. Across the district, "green" activities are in place that include such things as recycling paper, creating a birdhouse habitat, using five percent less energy at the school, or establishing a Michigan Garden Project with native plants.

Schools that implement 10 of the 20 projects are awarded the Green School status. A school that takes the extra steps and participates in 15 of the activities can apply to be designated an Emerald School.

This year, 126 schools were honored for their participation in environmental activities.
