UCS student artists take top honors in regional competition

More than 70 honors were awarded to Utica Community Schools students through the annual Scholastic Arts competition, including one of the top five awards in the program.

Stevenson High School (grade) Thy Hoang earned an American Vision honor and will represent the region at the national competition. Her award was in digital art for “Deal with The Devil.” Her teacher is Stevenson teacher Pattie Fields.

In addition, three UCS student artists received “Best of Show” recognition by judges:

Kaelyn Conkey, of Eisenhower High School, won the Ken Hoover Best of Show Gold Key honor for “Blizzard of Thought.” Her teacher is Nancy Druia.
Avery Urban, of Utica High School, earned a silver key honor for her portfolio, “Night of the Axe.” Her teacher is Erin Beckwell.
The Scholastic Arts Competition is a national program that honors the best in student-produced art.

More than 2,200 works of art and approximately 70 portfolios are received from middle school and high school students, with the assistance of volunteer art teachers, which are then adjudicated and selected for Honorable Mentions, Silver and Gold Key Awards, American Vision nominations and Best of Show Portfolios.
