A Utica Community Schools team finished among the top ten at a national health careers education tournament.
The team of Brandon Khaddor and Dominick Karjo of Stevenson High School and Alena Ayar of Henry Ford II High School placed eighth among the nation’s best at the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) health education competition.
HOSA is a national student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education that promotes career opportunities in the healthcare industry and enhances the delivery of quality healthcare.
The HOSA competition required students to select a health-related concept and prepare a lesson, provide instruction and evaluate their results.
The UCS team presented on the topic of hypothermia. They earned entry into the national competition after taking first place at the statewide tournament.
Another UCS team comprised of Stevenson students Yue Yan Feng and Shania Luk also qualified for the national tournament after finishing second in the state. They presented in the community emergency response category.

In addition, Stevenson student Selena Gappy served at the HOSA national tournament as a Michigan postsecondary state officer delegate.
