Driver Arrested In Fatal I-696 Hit-And-Run Crash In Macomb Co.: Police

Police did not announce any formal charges and no further details about the suspected driver were released by police.

ROSEVILLE, MI — A driver was arrested in connection to a Friday hit-and-run crash on Interstate 696 that killed a 14-year-old boy in Roseville, according to Michigan State Police.

Police said investigators from the Michigan State Police Second District Special Investigation Section and Metro North troopers found the motorist.

Police did not announce any formal charges and no further details about the suspected driver were released by police.

"This was great work from detectives taking very little information from the scene and finding this suspect," First lieutenant Mike Shaw said. "We are hopeful this gives his family a small amount of closure."

Troopers said the 14-year-old Warren boy was walking on the Groesbeck Highway entrance ramp onto eastbound Interstate 696 on Friday at 4:25 a.m. when he was struck by a car.

Officials found the teen lying in the roadway and began performing CPR, but those efforts were unsuccessful and they declared the teen dead at the scene, according to Michigan State Police.

The driver who hit the teen never stopped and police did not immediately release a vehicle description, according to Michigan State Police.

Witnesses told troopers they saw the teen, was reported missing two hours before the crash, stumbling in the roadway prior to the crash, according to Michigan State Police.

Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said although officials have evidence from the crash scene, investigators are still looking for witnesses to fill in the final pieces.
