Puppets on parade! The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is displaying some of the best examples of American “Royal Marionettes,” from its Paul McPharlin Puppetry Collection from June 29, 2011, to Jan. 1, 2012.
The history of marionettes dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when puppets were part of large theatrical troupes. Visitors will get an idea of what people from the past enjoyed as the marionettes will be displayed on stage sets with dramatic lighting.
Skeleton; Clown on Stilts; Pat and Biddy: A Pair of Irish Dancers; Diver; Octopus; Scaramouche; Harlequin; and Pair of Devils are among the characters visitors will meet.
