High School Playoff Season Resumes This Week

As the boys hoops squads begin their playoff runs, the Lakers continue capture the regional crown and prepare for the semifinals.

It’s a crazy-busy stretch here for the Pick of the Week staff, with all kinds of playoffs under way and a slew of seasons coming to an end. 

That said, it’s also a very exciting time for prep sports fans. 

With that in mind, let’s take our weekly look back at the week that was, and the week that lies ahead.

  • The Lakers captured a regional title this past week with a 4-2 win over Birmingham. The squad, despite its youth, seems to be peaking at just the right time! Way to go boys!
  • Hats off to the girls hoops squads from (who lost to Grosse Pointe North in the district finals, 41-27); who were also ousted by GPN, but this time in the semifinals, 52-33; and which fell in the district opener to Harper Woods High, 56-42. Despite the losses, each squad played hard and had a great season.
  • Kudos to Lake Shore , JacQuan Moore (103 pounds) who wrestled his way to a 6th place finish in the state.
  • Congrats to Lake Shore , Sean Kokenos, who advanced to the state semifinals before falling to Marquette’s Zach Scott, 362-347.

Looking ahead

  • The Lakers skate against Lake Orion Wednesday at for a shot at a semifinals berth. Please, get out there and support the team. 
  • The boys basketball squads tip off the postseason Monday, with Lakeview and Lake Shore competing at Grosse Pointe South, While South Lake waits until Wednesday to get the tournament underway. The Huskies battle Grosse Pointe North at 5:30 p.m., while Lake Shore squares off against GPS at 7 p.m. The Cavs play either Center Line or Detroit Osborn March 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Harper Woods High.
