The two teams played to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night—an outcome the Shorians felt very good about.
“This was a very good tie for us,” Lake Shores coach George Spiteri said. “We’ve got some good senior leadership, but we’ve also got some holes we’re filling with a lot youth. We’re trying to get the mix right. So this was a big tie for us, for sure.”
Lake Shore got out to an early lead when senior Aleesha Kiesgen snuck a ball past Huskies goalkeeper Shawna Cooley at the 28:28 mark of the opening half.
“I think getting the lead was important for us,” Lipscomb said. “It helped to give us some confidence.”
The two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the half, then Lakeview came out in the closing 40 minutes much more aggressive—something Lake Shore players were expecting,
“We definitely knew they were going to put more pressure on us,” Lipscomb said. “I mean, down 1-0, I expected them to come out hard and they did.”
The Huskies controlled much of the second half, but managed to get just one ball into the back of the net.
Sarah Economeans recorded the lone Lakeview goal at the 23:33 mark of the second half.
“Amanda (Lipscomb) was awesome for us in the net,” Spiteri said. “She made all the big stops for us tonight and that was huge. It really was.”
Lake Shore’s defensive effort was solid against a quicker Lakeview squad that just couldn’t seem to get the ball past Lipscomb.
“I knew I had to step up and play even harder,” the senior Lake Shore goal keeper said. “But I think the whole team gave it everything tonight. And I thought we came out and did our best, and we did what we did.”
The tie is a step forward for a Shorians squad who might be showing more potential than many might have expected just a couple of weeks ago.
“I would say my expectations are higher now, not that they weren’t high already,” Spiteri said. “But now I know what we can do when we really focus and play with some intensity. It’s exciting.”
The tie moved both Lake Shore to 0-1-1 on the year. is 1-1-1.
