Police Trace Boat Left Behind in Hit-and-Run to Owner

Police speculate the driver took off after allegedly hitting utility pole because he was "scared."

St. Clair Shores, MI — Police said a driver involved in a hit-and-run accident in St. Clair Shores Sunday left a big clue behind: the 16-foot boat and trailer he was hauling.

St. Clair Shores Police Officer Paul Oppler said Monday the man, described as a Macomb County man in his 40s, was “scared after crashing” into a utility pole and left the boat and trailer behind, The Macomb Daily reports.

He was cited Monday for leaving the scene of an accident, which is a misdemeanor, along with a civil infraction, the newspaper said.

Police aren’t sure what caused the motorist to lose control of his vehicle and hit the utility pole outside the Roy O’Brien Ford dealership on Nine Mile Road near Greater Mack Avenue.

And the driver is unsure how the boat and trailer became unhitched. Police have impounded the boat.
