South Lake Raises Funds for Wigs 4 Kids

Students throughout South Lake Schools raised over $1,000 for St. Clair Shores-based charity Wigs 4 Kids.

Students throughout the South Lake district came together in recent weeks to raise over $1,000 for .

Members of the senior class led the effort to raise $1,033 by selling paper stars which filled the front office window at the high school; middle school students sold bagels and a charity volleyball game was organized between teachers and high school students.

The funds were donated Friday to Wigs 4 Kids, a St. Clair Shores-based non-profit organization that helps children and young adults experiencing hair loss by providing custom-fitted, age-appropriate wigs.

"I am proud of them," said Wigs 4 Kids founder and CEO Maggie Varney. "This program is about kids helping kids."

This was the second year South Lake students raised funds for Wigs 4 Kids. Last year the students raised over $800, enough to cover the cost of a wig. By raising over $1,000, the South Lake Schools will be recognized as a "Founding Center" at the Wigs 4 Kids Wellness Center.

The reality of cancer hit home to many students when ninth-grader Justin Taliban, was this year.

"It could hit someone you know," said senior Margaret Elias, 17, of Eastpointe.

Senior Symone Hicks was proud of her fellow students who donated their own time and money to Wigs 4 Kids.

"I am glad our class started this last year," said Hicks, 17, of St. Clair Shores. "Especially since we are helping other kids."
