South Lake Serves Pasta for a Play

Students gear up for the production of 'Footloose' by hosting a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for the spring musical.

Members of the South Lake High School Drama Club exemplify the saying “where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Faced with the possibility that the school may not have a spring musical due to funding cuts from the district, the club rallied again this year to plan a community spaghetti dinner to ensure the show would go on.

This is the second year the students have taken it upon themselves to raise the funds needed to offset the cost of obtaining the rights to the play and other production costs.

Arlene Schoenherr, the school's drama director,  said the productions play a big role in students’ lives. “For some of these kids, this is all they do in terms of extracurricular activities.”

Funds raised at Tuesday's fund-raiser in the school cafeteria will be used to stage “Footloose” on March 25-26.

Schoenherr and Eleonore Ellero-Groth, vocal director, are especially excited about this year’s musical because students from all grade levels are taking unique ownership of the production.

“One of our sophomores, Josiah Baker, is choreographing the main group numbers,” Schoenherr said. “We also have about seven eighth-graders participating in the musical, including Josiah’s sister, Angelica.”

“We really hope the community comes out and supports the students both at the spaghetti dinner and the musical,” Schoenherr said. “The kids are working so hard, and I know it will be a fantastic show.”

Tickets for both the spaghetti dinner and “Footloose” can be obtained at themain office. The fund-raising spaghetti dinner will take place 4-7 p.m. Tuesday in the school’s cafeteria. Tickets are $10, $7 for students. For more information, call 435-1400.
