...Alternative Prescription Medication Can Save You $$$$$

It is common for a patient to pay a high copay or high dollar amount for a prescription because the medication does not have a generic equivalent that would save him or her money. 

Did you know just because a particular med does not have a generic equivalent, it doesn't mean there aren't  generic alternatives.  What do I mean by that?  Let's take a very simple example. 

There are high blood pressure medications that do not have generic equivalents, but there are almost always generic alternatives that can save you money.  A generic alternative is a drug that is "chemically" in the same family. 

So drug A and B might not be identical, but in the same family.   So if there is no generic for drug A which is a brand, it may very well be substituted by your pharmacist for drug B which is a generic. 

Of course you need to have this approved by your doctor, and if you ask your pharmacist, he or she will usually be glad to discuss the idea with your doctor. 

Generic drug alternative substitution is done all of the time and is very successful.  If you are paying "too much" for a particular medication, chances are there are less expensive choices that will give you the same health benefit.
