After Two Decades, Slick Disc Still Stands Out

Whether you want music, guitar strings, clothing or skateboards, patrons say Slick Disc in Trenton is the place to be.

In a time when mom-and-pops are giving way to big boxes, and music stores are a dying breed, stands out in its success and resilience.

The one-stop music, movie and pop culture store is one of the last remaining independent music retailers Downriver, and this is only part of what brings people in to this Trenton staple.

Owner Rob Slykerman opened the store more than 20 years ago when he was 20 years old and has operated it ever since. Slykerman said his secret to success has been "thinking outside the box and pushing the envelope."

Slick Disc's customers, including Trenton resident Steph Collins, 31, said they appreciate the unique approach.

"There are just few places like it," Collins said. "It's almost an experience to come here, rather than a trip to the store."

Slick Disc's interesting and thought-provoking merchandise is what draws folks from all over the area, and is also what keeps them coming back, owners and patrons said.

"I love this place," said Doug Clankton, 23, of Romulus. "It's just everything I want in a store. I love it. I'd drive here from New York City if I had to."

"I find stuff here, music, pop culture stuff, that I just can't find anywhere else," added Leif Wozniak, 27, while looking over the merchandise at Slick Disc.

Slick Disc's customers said they appreciate that it is an alternative to the big-box stores that dominate the music and movie retail sales industry.

"Mom-and-pop places like this are a rare breed," Wozniak said. "It's too bad, because they have so much more to offer. Slick Disc is a great example of that.

"There needs to be more places like this in the world. Not everything has to be sold at Wal-Mart, you know."

The store offers a wide variety of stuff for the music lover, movie buff and otherwise pop culture aficionado—everything from hard-to-find CDs and vinyl to posters, clothing and guitar accessories. Skateboarding accessories and incense items are also available.

"It's a lifestyle store, really," Clankton said. "You're either about this lifestyle or you're not. If you are, then this place is the best place to go."
