Trenton Hockey Survives Wyandotte Comeback

Trenton let a three-goal lead slip away Wednesday night at Wyandotte Roosevelt, but beat the Bears in overtime 4-3.

jumped out to a three-goal lead Wednesday night on the road against , but needed overtime to come away with a 4-3 victory.

The first goal of the night for the Trojans (10-1-0-1) came from senior defenseman Cory Dunn, who put the Bears (3-7-0-1) down 1-0 at the 8:24 mark of the first period.

About three minutes later, a goal by senior forward Michael Lesko put Trenton up 2-0.

Lesko’s goal prompted Roosevelt Coach Mike Quint to switch goaltenders, benching junior Dalan Bulchak in favor of sophomore Frank Cerulla.

Trenton senior forward Corey Seychel scored less than one minute after the switch, giving the Trojans what appeared to be a commanding 3-0 lead.

After Seychel's goal, however, Cerulla played tough in the net and the Bears offense was able to find a spark.

Roosevelt senior defenseman Ryan Lynch was able to provide that spark, putting his team on the board late in the first period, scoring at the 15:49 mark.

Both squads were scoreless in the second period, as both Cerulla and Trenton senior goaltender Blake Wojtala were strong when tested.

Two third-period penalties committed by the Trojans led to a pair of quick power play goals by the Bears, which tied the game at 3-3. Senior forward Tyler Groat scored both goals, with the first coming at 6:54, and the second at 7:23. 

With the game tied, Trenton then increased offensive pressure inside the Wyandotte zone. Cerulla, and the Wyandotte defense, however, were up to challenge and turned the Trojans away, sending the contest into overtime.

That tough offensive attack of the Trojans continued into overtime and eventually delievered when it mattered most.

At the 3:55 mark of overtime, Seychel scored his second goal of the night, sending his team home with a 4-3 win.

Seychel finished the night with two goals, while junior forward Joey Russo was credited with two assists in the game.

A Look Back and a Look Ahead

Wednesday night’s win was the second victory against the defending state champion Bears this season. The Trojans knocked off Roosevelt . Trenton is currently in second place in the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League and next plays Saturday night at home against Grosse Pointe North.
