1 Killed, 2 Hurt In Sterling Heights Crash: Police

Officers tried stopping a SUV for a traffic violation, but the teen driver sped away and slammed into another SUV, police said.

STERLING HEIGHTS, MI — A 16-year-old Detroit boy is expected to face charges in connection to a Saturday night crash that killed a woman and injured two others in Sterling Heights, police said.

Police said the teen was speeding away from officers in a Chevy Equinox and ran a red light in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and Metro Parkway at 9:30 p.m. when he slammed into a GMC Terrain.

The 31-year-old woman was killed in the crash and her 34-year-old husband and 2-year-old child were listed in critical condition, police said.

Family identified the mother as Faith Gumma, her husband Norman Gumma and 2-year-old son Elijah Gumma, according to a GoFundMe page.

Elijah suffered fractured ribs and lacerated organs in the crash, but was expected to make a full recovery, family members said. Norman, on the other hand, was still intubated and in critical condition at the hospital, family members said, according to the GoFundMe page.

The teen driver was not injured and was arrested in connection to the crash, police said.

Officers said the Chevy Equinox was driving straight with its blinker on for roughly a mile in the area of Van Dyke Avenue and 15 Mile Road, according to police.

Officers then ran the SUV's license plate, which came back with no insurance, police said.

Officers then tried stopping the SUV, but the teen fled sped away and slammed into the GMC Terrain roughly 36 seconds later, police said.

Police were still investigating the crash and asked anyone with information to call the Sterling Heights Investigations Bureau at 586-446-2825.

As of Tuesday morning, the GoFundMe page raised more than $148,000, short of its $200,000 goal.
