29 Detroit Country Day School Senior Students Named 2017 National Merit Semifinalists
A total of 19 percent of DCDS's Class of 2017 have been recognized as some of the highest achieving entrants in the state

Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) announced that 29 of the school’s 155 senior year students—which equates to 19 percent of the Class of 2017 and the highest in school memory—were named 2017 National Merit Semifinalists. The students will have the opportunity to compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million. DCDS Headmaster Glen Shilling made the announcement.
“Each year a number of our students are recognized for the hard work and academic scholarship that goes into this remarkable achievement,” Shilling said. “To have such a high percentage of our students among the best and brightest scholars in our nation this year speaks volumes about the programs and opportunities our faculty, staff and community work every day to create. The class of 2017 has set the academic bar very high.”
Semifinalists are categorized as the highest scoring entrants in each state. About 1.5 million junior class students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program each year by taking the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In order to qualify as a semifinalist, students must score well on the qualifying test, earn SAT scores that validate the student’s performance on the qualifying test, possess an outstanding academic record throughout high school, and be recommended by the high school principal. The finalists’ scholarships will be presented in spring 2017.
