Doug Baltz, a physics teacher at Birmingham Seaholm High School, has been selected as this year’s Birmingham Education Association Teacher of the Year. In recognition of this honor, Baltz was awarded a free, one-year vehicle lease by The Suburban Collection.
Baltz was nominated for this honor by other Seaholm teachers in individual letters to the Birmingham Education Association. Citing his leadership role in the district’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities, they also noted his role in establishing the STEMx program this past year. STEMx is a program which has Seaholm students work with ergonomics software at Oakland University’s School of Engineering. His teaching and leadership skills during his 25 years in teaching were noted by all.
“Doug Baltz dedicates his life to the students and staff of Birmingham Public Schools,” said Scott Warrow, Birmingham Education Association President. “Through his challenging lessons with AP Physics students, mentoring younger teachers, developing unique science curriculum, help with the district’s Saturday school program for struggling students, commitment to summer programming for middle school and elementary kids, or is genuine optimism in everything he does, Doug is a role model for us all.”
