Driver Reaches 118 MPH In Troy, Causes Crash During Police Chase: Cops

TROY, MI — A Genesee County man is in trouble after speeding away from Troy officers during a traffic stop before eventually crashing his car in December, according to police.

The 29-year-old Mount Morris man was charged with three counts of second-degree fleeing and eluding. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted on each charge.

Officers stopped a 2023 Genesis for speeding after radar readings clocked the car going 118 miles per hour on Interstate 75 near Crooks Rd. in Troy on Dec. 20, police said.

When officers approached the driver, who had one passenger in the car, the man said he didn't have his driver's license or other documents with him, police said.

The Genesis then sped away from officers, police said.

Officers chased the Genesis as it got off the freeway at Adams Road, but then lost sight of the car near Square Lake Road, ending the chase, police said.

About a minute later, officers were told there was a serious crash at Square Lake and Glyndebourne Drive, police said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the Genesis and a Lexus RX with "significant damage," police said.

Investigators determined the Genesis slammed head-on into the Lexus RX, causing the Genesis to catch fire, police said.

Officials pulled both men from the burning Genesis and took them to a nearby hospital for serious injuries, police said.

The two people in the Lexus were also taken to a hospital with serous injuries, police said.

Police did not release the name of the driver who was arrested in connection to fleeing officers and causing the crash.
