UPDATE: First Day of School Photos: From Jitters to Smiles

Parents waiting to pick up their children after classes Tuesday spoke about the first day of classes of the year at Schroeder Elementary School.

First-day jitters were all but gone by the end of class Tuesday for many students at Schroeder Elementary School where a half-day of classes started the school year.

Troy parent Anne Selemba, who has a second- and fourth-grader at Schroeder, said her children were happy to get back to school, but she had mixed feelings about the summer coming to a close.

"They were both very excited," Selemba said. "They were looking forward to it and seeing friends. ... It's bittersweet. I enjoy them around in the summer."

Rajan Morthy said Tuesday was the first day of kindergarten for his 5-year-old daughter, Mahima. "She is a little shy, maybe she'll pick it up," Morthy said, as he waited for classes to be dismissed.

But it was all smiles for the proud parents and their daughter after reuniting after class and posing for a photo.

Vijay Sayee, who's son Sanjit started first grade on Tuesday, said his son enjoyed kindergarten at Schroeder last year, but not quite as much as being able to play at home while on summer vacation.

"With vacation, he was used to playing at home." he said. "He didn't want to come to school today."
