Free Secure Shredding Event Offered at Local Credit Union

Cornerstone Community Financial Credit Union will offer free, secure shredding services at its Somerset branch on Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Cornerstone’s Somerset branch is located at 3001 W. Big Beaver Road in Troy, next to Ocean Prime restaurant. The community is invited to bring sensitive papers in need of shredding, such as financial statements, credit card checks and canceled checks. The event is free and open to everyone.

“Shredding private information is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself from identity theft,” said Margaret Kilburn, Cornerstone’s compliance officer and financial safety expert. “Even though we often only hear about digital hacking instances, most information used for identity theft is still obtained through hard copy paper sources.”

As an added convenience, the Salvation Army will have a donation truck onsite accepting clothing, furniture and other household donations. There will also be an ice cream truck at the event, handing out free ice cream from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity to get organized for the Fall season,” said Heidi Kassab, president and CEO of Cornerstone Community Financial. “Shred those papers that have been piling up, clear out that clutter and donate it to the Salvation Army, then grab a free ice cream!”
