Police: Officer was changing a flat tire in the parking lot when a verbal argument with a motorist turned physical and resulted in gunfire.

Authorities are still trying to untangle what happened before an off-duty Detroit police officer allegedly shot two people early Sunday morning during an altercation in the parking lot of The Palace of Auburn Hills, where comedian Kevin Hill was performing a double-header.

In a statement, Auburn Hills Police Lt. Jill McDonnell said the officer was changing a flat tire in a parking space shortly before the altercation began just after midnight, The Detroit News reports.

“There was a verbal dispute then a physical altercation when two of the occupants of the second vehicle exited their vehicle,” the statement read, according to MLive.com. “The off-duty officer fired on and struck two people, a 32-year-old Detroit man and a 31-year-old Harper Woods woman.”

“The officer was attacked in the parking lot and responded by using his off-duty weapon,” the Detroit Police Department said in a statement.

According to the statement, all three were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries at McLaren Oakwood Hospital. Detroit police said the off-duty officer, 26, was “attacked” and sustained a “substantial” injury, MLive.com reports.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities expect to file a report for the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office’s review by week’s end. The Detroit Police Department is conducting its own investigation.
