Jury Convicts Troy Man in Neighbor's Stabbing

A charge against Charles Anthony Stephens' co-defendant, William Jones, is still pending.

TROY, MI — An Oakland County jury on Tuesday returned a felony murder guilty verdict against a Troy man of felony murder in the stabbing death of his neighbor last spring. Charles Anthony Stephens, 53, will be sentenced on Nov. 9, and faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.

A case involving a co-defendant, William Jones, is still pending, the Troy Police Department said in a news release.

Police said Stephens broke into an apartment complex on Golfview Street in March and stabbed 37-year-old Kalpana Murali-Babu, a wife and mother of children ages 10 and 7.

Marali-Babu’s husband was out of town at the time. Police discovered her body after they were asked to conduct a welfare check at her residence in the Somerset Park Apartments.
