Gleaners' Hunger Free Summer Food Fight Asks Local Businesses to Fight Hunger & Feed Children

Gleaners Community Food Bank is asking businesses and organizations in southeast Michigan to help fight childhood hunger by joining its 23rd Annual Hunger Free Summer Food Fight starting Monday, July 17, 2017 through Friday, July 28, 2017.

All companies have an equal chance of being a Food Fight winner - participating companies are grouped by number of employees and compete against others in their “weight category” for the Madeline Kafoury Memorial Trophies. In addition to greatest “weight,” winners will be selected for special awards: Facebook Fan Favorite and the New Participant.

Currently this year’s annual food and fund drive has 23 businesses signed up to compete to raise the most meals over the two-week period – but Gleaners hopes to double that number by the time the competition begins!

Last year more than forty southeast Michigan businesses and organizations participated, raising enough food and funds to provide over 329,000 meals to hungry southeast Michigan children this summer. Over the past 10 years the Food Fight has provided 2,076,726 meals for hungry families in southeast Michigan.

Nearly 300,000 children in southeastern Michigan depend on school-provided free or reduced-fee meals. When school is out, these children are home and are at risk of missing important meals. According to the 2016 Kids Count Michigan study, child poverty has gone up in 80 of 83 Michigan counties since 2006, including in all five counties Gleaners serves. A 2015 Journal of Adolescent Health review found that children who participated in school breakfast or lunch programs showed significant improvement in grades and standardized test scores as well as having fewer school absences.
