Athens High School Band Heads To State Finals This Weekend

Red Hawks battle 12 other bands in their division at Ford Field.

The Troy Athens Marching Band will take the field this weekend - the Detroit Lions Ford Field, that is.

The Red Hawks are headed to the MCBA (Michigan Competing Band Association) finals Saturday in Detroit where they will compete in the Flight I Division against 12 other schools. The Red Hawks are currently ranked sixth in the state.

“The performance level ranks among the best groups we’ve had through the years at Athens High School. I’m very proud of our musicians’ focus and hard work,” said Jeff McCoy, director of Athens' bands.

The 115 band members are set to perform their 2012 competition show "Siren Song."  The production follows a group of sailors who fall prey to sirens – mythical creatures who lure their victims to a watery grave. The sailors and sirens battle across three musical movements, beginning with two compositions by Robert W. Smith, “Winds of Poseidon” and “Isle of Calypso.” The final movement features the finale of Michael Daugherty’s Metropolis Symphony, “The Red Cape Tango.”

The Red Hawks are set to perform at 9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $16 for adults, $12 for kids, and ages 5 and under are free. Cash-only tickets are available the day of the event at Ford Field.
