Troy Man Shot, Injured After Catching Thieves In His Driveway: Police

Police said the thieves were trying to steal the catalytic converter from his pickup truck when the homeowner confronted them.

TROY, MI — A Troy homeowner was shot Tuesday morning after he caught two people trying to steal the catalytic converter from his pickup truck, Troy Police said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.

The man told officers he confronted two people who were trying to steal the catalytic converter from his pickup truck in the driveway at his home in the area of Fredmoor Street and South Boulevard at 3:42 a.m.

The thieves then ran toward a dark-colored SUV that waiting on the grass near the home's driveway, police said.

One of the thieves then turned back toward the homeowner and fired a shot from a handgun, striking the man in the leg, before the SUV drove away on South Boulevard, police said.

Before the shooting, Troy officers were investigating a different catalytic converter theft from a vehicle parked in the driveway in the area of Cypress and Bristol drives, police said.

Neighbors described seeing a similar dark-colored SUV fleeing the area, police said.

Police have not identified the thieves or a suspected shooter. Police were still investigating the thefts and shooting.
