Today members of TSD's Superintendent Student Advisory Board and National Honor Society spent their morning getting the gymnasiums at Athens High School ready for one of our biggest events of the year: Our MLK Day of Service! We are expecting more than 1,000 people of all ages, races and ethnicities to gather at Athens (4333 John R., Troy) on Monday, January 16 at 8:30 am for a Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We will begin with a free breakfast at 8:30, a short presentation by current students about the life and service of Dr. King follows, then we will all go into both gyms at Athens High School to:
- Write letters to TROY-based troops serving overseas and local healthcare heroes
- Make no-sew fleece blankets for hospital patients, those undergoing chemo, veterans and other vulnerable populations
- Donate blood (many advance spots are filled, but they are saving room for walk-ins!)
- Assemble craft kits for Assisted Living Centers
- Paint and create “Kindness rocks”
- Plant seedlings to celebrate nature and awareness of climate change
Imagine what a great visual this will make--all of these people working together in hands-on service. This event is especially important, as we return to an in-person celebration after several years of COVID. It's a chance for our entire community to come together--our students, our parents, our staff and residents of city of Troy--to make a difference for those around us.
Please consider joining us--and being part of our ONETroy experience.
