With Tiny Sombreros, Baker Students Celebrate Cinco de Mayo
Students make paper hats to help celebrate the Mexican holiday.
Spanish teacher Loni Vargas had students color, cut and glue together small paper sombreros Friday as she taught them about Cinco de Mayo.
"There are two common misconceptions about Cinco de Mayo," Vargas told her class, adding that some people confuse it with Mexican Independence Day or Día de los Muertos.
"Mexico's Independence Day is September 26," she clarified, and Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is in November.

"It's when Mexico defeated France in a war," 11-year-old Rohit Goru said. "It's a common mistake to assume it's Independence Day."
