Would Dream Cruise Run Out of Gas If It Went More Than a Day?

Some cruisers wish the auto event ran for a weekend or a whole week. Would it still be fun, fun, fun to look at the same T-bird for 3 days?

This weekend, the Woodward Dream Cruise—which draws more than a million people and 40,000 automobiles to nine Oakland County communities along Woodward Avenue— marks its 21st year celebrating classic cars.

Technically, the event only runs for a day—this year, it’s Saturday, Aug. 15—but early “cruisers” with their vintage Fords, Chevys and other models sometimes begin unofficial festivities the Sunday before the big day. In fact, some Dream Cruise die hards are known to arrive as early as April and stick around until the August celebration, according to a Daily Tribune report.

While car lovers might enjoy the extra days of fun, some Oakland County shops along Woodward Avenue claim the early birds can disrupt their business by clogging parking lots and local roads, the report stated. For instance, Royal Oak police have received almost 120 complaints about early cruisers from citizens between April and June, the report added.

But what if the Woodward Dream Cruise was officially scheduled to run three days—Friday, Saturday and Sunday? Better yet, what if the event ran an entire week? Would extending Dream Cruise’s sanctioned festivities end up making more people happy? Or would changing the event cause more problems than it would solve? For that matter, will looking at classic cars for three consecutive days or more cause even the most hardcore auto lovers to go a little bit crazy?
