Lakers Fall in First Round of Wrestling Finals

Ross Bahro and Danny Davidson of West Bloomfield High School lost in the MHSAA Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills, but will get a second chance Friday.

AUBURN HILLS — sophomore Ross Bahro tried to come back from a 5-2 deficit in the third round (119 pound bracket), but couldn't make it in the MHSAA varsity individual wrestling finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Bahro managed to tie the match with a takedown with 1:28 to go, by grabbing Temperance-Bedford junior Mitch Pawlak's leg and taking him to the ground. Pawlak recovered after the two went out of bounds and almost immediately regained control of the match. Pawlak hit a takedown with :45 seconds to go and won 8-5.

West Bloomfield senior Danny Davidson struggled against Detroit Catholic Central's Malik Amine. Davidson lost on a 11-3 decision. The senior didn't score a takedown in the loss.

With the losses, the Lakers wrestlers at the state finals will face elimination Friday morning in the consolation bracket.

"We have to get the butterflies out," West Bloomfield coach Greg Alessi said. "Everybody here is good, so you really can't wrestle a bad match. Hopefully tomorrow we'll come out and win at least one."
