Actor Chris Lowell is bringing his indie film about a friends reunion back to Michigan, where it found a home.
“Beside Still Waters” found a home in Michigan while actor Chris Lowell was starring in another movie. It shows Wednesday in Bloomfield Township.
Actor Chris Lowell, best known for playing Emma Stone’s boyfriend in “The Help” and Stosh (Piz) Piznarski in the “Veronica Mars”television series and 2014 movie, is returning to Michigan with “Beside Still Waters,” his directing debut.

The movie, which was shot in Petoskey in 2012, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Maple Theatre, 4135 W. Maple Road, in Bloomfield Township.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Lowell, 30, showed the “Beside Still Waters” script to producers of “Brightest Star,” a movie he was starring hin. The producers, who included West Bloomfield native Jason Potash, who suggested that Michigan, with its many lakes and film incentive program, would be an ideal location.

The film – financed, cast shot and mixed in 2012 – qualified for nearly $80,000 in Michigan film tax credits, based on in-state spending of $276,000.

The small-budget independent film, which won a jury prize at the 2013 Austin Film Festival’s narrative feature awards, is a friends reunion story often compared to “The Big Chill.” After his parents die and their lakefront summer home is about to the sold, Daniel (Ryan Eggold) and his friends gather for one final weekend.
The cast also includes Britt Lower, Brett Dalton, Beck Bennett Will Brill, Reid Scott, Jessy Hodges and Erin Darke.
Lowell said the film, which he and writing partner Mohit Narang co-wrote to determine if they clicked as collaborators, was inspired by his family’s home in Georgia.
