BREAKING: Snyder Fires Another Top Ranking DEQ Official

Governor says work is being done to change the culture of the Department of Environmental Quality after Flint water crisis.

LANSING, MI – Gov. Rick Snyder has fired the former head of the Michigan Department of Environental Quality’s Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance unit has been fired in the wake of the Flint water crisis, according to a news release.

“Putting the well-being of Michiganders first needs to be the top priority for all state employees,” Snyder said in a press release. “Anything less than that is unacceptable. The DEQ is working to change this culture and ensure mistakes that endanger our residents don’t occur again.”

The Detroit News and other media are identifying the fired official as Liane Shekter Smith, who headed the agency division responsible for overseeing Flint’s switch from Lake Huron to the Flint River in 2014. The newspaper said Smith received a $2,652 performance bonus four months ago.
