Celebrate Michigan Week at this sweet program. Frederick Sanders Schmidt opened his first Detroit candy shop on June 17, 1875 at Woodward and Gratiot Ave. He relocated to Michigan after the Great Fire of 1871 destroyed his original shop in Chicago. Sanders’s single retail location grew to 57 stores in the Metropolitan Detroit area and became famous for his candy, fudge toppings, and soda fountain drinks. According to one popular story of the time, Sanders invented the ice cream soda.
