UPDATE: The Big Game in West Bloomfield
West Bloomfield High School boys teams take the spotlight as the hockey playoffs, basketball season finale and individual wrestling state finals get set to take place.
The week ahead promises exciting action as several teams in West Bloomfield Township are either gearing up for the playoffs or already there.
Monday
Livonia Stevenson High topped West Bloomfield High in the first round of the boys hockey regional playoffs at Orchard Lake St. Mary's High, 6-2. According to coach Jeff Lupo, senior Zach Rogow scored on a power play in the first period to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Stevenson scored three goals before junior Andrew Murphy scored to make it 3-2 with 2:45 left in the second. Stevenson then scored two goals in 16 seconds to lead 5-2 going into the third. Stevenson then scored on the power play with 3:56 left to win 6-2.

Lupo said that senior goalie Bryan Cornfield "played outstanding in goal and kept them at bay the majority of the game. Again, we were led by our seniors."
"I am very proud of the heart and passion the kids showed tonight," he added. "They left everything they had on the ice and as a coach that is all you can ask for."

Tuesday
The WBHS boys basketball team hit the road to play Clarkston High hoping to make up for some ground to gain the OAA-Red's top spot in the standings prior to the season finale. However, the Lakers (12-7, 9-4) by the Wolves, 66-24.
Clarkston went into the game hungry for a win and took a 20-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers just couldn’t keep up.
“We had an awful practice yesterday, and when you don’t have the necessary intensity on the day before a big game, this is what happens,” said West Bloomfield head coach Jeremy Denha.
“We have to learn from our mistakes and get back on the right track for playoffs,” Denha said.
The last time the two played, Jan. 27, the Lakers fell to Clarkston at home, 60-50, despite 14 points from . This time, however, Parker only scored six points to lead WBHS.
Thursday
The individual state wrestling finals kick off at the Palace of Auburn Hills and run through Saturday. WBHS will be represented by seniors Anthony Thompson (130 pounds) and Avery Hasenauer (145 pounds).
According to coach Greg Alessi, the two wrestlers have a good chance of placing in the top eight of the competition.
"The way I see it, if they do what they do best at the right time, they’ve got a good chance to win big," Alessi said.
In boys basketball action, the Lakers will take on rival Farmington Hills Harrison High (4-11, 2-10) on the road in the last regular-season game before the playoffs begin March 7.
