The man, whose name wasn’t released, sustained a severe injury to his hand when the homemade explosive device blew up while he was handling it about 1 p.m. Friday in the 4800 block of Joslyn Road, according to an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Deputies were called to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where he was transported for specialized treatment of his badly burned left hand. He was transferred there from McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac.

A friend who was with the man at the time, also 21 and a resident of Orion Township, was uninjured.

“The two young men stated that they did this for ‘entertainment’ and did not expect the device to be as explosive as it was,” the sheriff’s office said.

During a sweep of the property where the accident took place, deputies found three activated devices in the back yard. The homemade bombs were made by partially filling 2-liter plastic bottles with dry ice to make a compressed air explosive device, authorities said.

Deputies safely detonated the three compressed air devices with a shotgun.

The incident has been reported to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Department for further investigation, and will also be reviewed by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges.
