Meijer Supermarket Chain Adding 10,000 Local, Regional Jobs

Midwest supermarket retailer Meijer said Wednesday it’s adding 10,000 employees to its stores, citing both growth and seasonal staffing needs.

Janet Emerson, Meijer’s executive vice president of operations, said in a statement the company will add 4,800 workers in Michigan, 1,800 in Indiana, 1,700 in Ohio and 1,000 in Kentucky.

Meijer stores are open around the clock, closing only on Christmas Day. Staffing needs vary from store to store, the company said, but positions are available at all 213 of its supercenters and grocery stores.

Most of the jobs are part-time and seasonal, but can provide a gateway to a full-time career and Meijer continues to grow, the company said.

The open positions include stockers and cashiers, as well as some opportunities in more specialized roles, such as meat cutting and cake decorating.

The Grand Rapids-based retailer claims the title of the inventor of the “one-stop shopping” concept. Meijer stores have grown over the years to include expanded fresh produce and meat departments, as well as pharmacies, comprehensive electronics departments, garden centers and apparel offerings.
