Over Winter Break, Let Kids Climb Rocks, Not Your Walls

The West Bloomfield Parks & Recreation Commission has suggestions to help kids work off pent up energy.

West Bloomfield kids will be out of school for 16 days, from the final bell on Dec. 19 until they go back on Monday, Jan. 4.

That’s a lot of time for parents to fill. One option is a trip to Planet Rock in Madison Heights.

The West Bloomfield Parks & Recreation Commission is taking the work out of planning an excursion on Tuesday, Nov. 22. A bus loads at the Nature Center inside the Recreation Activities Center at 9 a.m.

Once there, they’ll learn to rock climb, eat lunch and then come back to the Nature Center for an afternoon spent with the park naturalist, who will introduce them to the animals that live in the nature room, teach them how to build a shelter outside with natural materials and lead a hike.

The activities wind down at 4 p.m.

Kids must wear gym shoes and bring snow boots, a water bottle and a sack lunch.

Snacks will be provided.

Once registered — you can do that here — an online waiver must be completed to participate at planet-rock.com.
