West Bloomfield Votes on 'Welcoming City' Designation

Some residents said the designation invites people who may be terrorists to the communities; others said refugees are fleeing terror.

WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI – West Bloomfield Township trustees voted, 3-2, Monday to keep its “Welcoming City” designation for immigrants.

West Bloomfield was one of 10 Michigan communities that joined the program, administered by Welcoming America and supported locally by Welcoming Cities & Counties in Michigan, a year ago, WWJ reports.

Trustees agreed to reconsider the designation in response to some residents’ security concerns after ISIS terror attacks in Paris and an influx of Syrian refugees into Michigan.

More than 100 people attended the Monday meeting, where the heated discussion got heated at times, WXYZ-TV reports.

Some argued that West Bloomfield should pull out of the program because of fears that it might invite terrorists to the community, but others said refugees aren’t terrorists, but are people who are fleeing terror.
