West Bloomfield Wrestler Reaches All-State Status

AUBURN HILLS - sophomore Ross Bahro made a mistake he won’t soon forgot at the MHSAA individual wrestling finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills over the weekend.

Bahro had a shot at seventh place in the 119-pound weight class consolation finals on Saturday.

Against Grosse Pointe North senior Patrick Salazar, he tied his match 5-5 with only five seconds left in the third round.

Salazar burst out the gate in overtime and nailed a takedown in six seconds to win 7-5.

"He kind of let up on overtime, you got to get ready to wrestle," Lakers coach Greg Alessi said. "He kind of stopped and the kid took a shot and got in on him."

Despite the lapse, Alessi couldn't fault Bahro's strong performance this weekend. It was the sophomore's first state finals appearance and he finished in eighth place.

"All-State as sophomore, 49 wins, a lot to build on," Alessi said. "We are really happy with him."

Bahro bounced back after with wins over Fraser’s Jonathan Hill and Sterling Heights Drew Martin. 

Teammate Danny Davidson wasn’t so lucky in the 135-pound division. He lost to Malik Amine on Thursday and was eliminated by Portage Central’s Kevin Haughn.
