District Releases New Statement on Bus Accident

The Huron Valley School District has released an update on Tuesday's bus crash.

Following an accident involving one of Huron Valley's school buses on Tuesday, the district has released the following statement:

"While bus accidents are rare, we take each one very seriously.  We are very proud of the students and driver who evacuated the bus quickly and orderly after yesterday’s accident. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt.

The accident is under review by the HVS Transportation Department and the police. The police have determined the driver was not speeding and alcohol was not a factor. The driver, a substitute on the route, is on leave pending further investigation.

To ensure the safety of our students, HVS bus drivers (including substitute drivers) are required by law to undergo a criminal background check, pass a physical exam, and possess a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) which includes both a written test and road test.  The Michigan Department of Education also requires new drivers to complete an additional 18 hours of training. Lastly, new drivers must drive with a trained veteran driver on various routes until they are fully capable of driving on their own.

The security of our students is our highest priority and we will continue to work very hard to provide safe transportation for our families."
