Haven Hill Showcases Redbud Reveal and New Art on the Hill
Friends group reveals new Art on the Hill displays, announces construction of a new Highland Recreation Area bike trail.
The Friends of Highland Recreation Area (FOHRA) showcased the redbud flowering trees that adorn the former Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate Sunday afternoon. The Friends also presented an informative display of βMaps Artβ on the Haven Hill road leading up to the lodge illustrating the rich history of the area.Β
FOHRA President Dick Russell welcomed the crowd with the backdrop of the redbud flowering trees that surround the Haven Hill Gatehouse at the entrance to the park. He said he was excited to announce that a new bike trail will be constructed in the next year that will connect to Milford.
Using the art of cartography, Larry Falardeau told the story of the 1-mile thick glacial ice cap that covered the 5,900 acres of forest, marshes and lakes which inspired the name High Lands. Using a series of maps that were on Haven Hill road he told the story of how Highland State Recreation Area was created.Β

Families and friends then enjoyed hiking up to the top where they viewed the footprint of the 6,900 square foot lodge built by Edsel Ford. The lodge is on top of what is known as Mt. Kanzer which is one of the highest points in Oakland County, some 1,150 feet above sea level.
