The forecast calls for a wicked combination of single-digit temperatures, snow and driving wind that will cut through right to your skin during the mile-or-so run – even if you’re fudging on the underwear with Spandex or long underwear.

Bottom line, β€˜you have to be comfortable first and foremost,”race director John Marcicky told the Detroit Free Press.

The National Weather Service offers a less optimistic – if -29 degree wind chill values can ever be considered optimistic – and said the 40 mph winds from an Arctic blast behind the cold front will make it feel as cold as -35 below in some areas.

Whether it feels like -29 or -35, it’s going to be too cold to venture out if you don’t have to, Dr. Rachel Rohde, an orthopedic surgeon at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, told the Free Press.

β€œThis weekend, it’s the frostbite thing I think a lot of us are worried about,” Rohde said. β€œIt’s very, very bad. People – even if they’re wearing gloves β€” may not be aware of how cold it is outside.”

DNR Cancels Outdoor Events

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said Friday that, due to the dangerously cold weather, it has canceled several outdoor programs and events scheduled for this weekend, particularly in the Upper Peninsula..

It’s Michigan’s free fishing weekend. It’s a good idea to call in advance to check for event cancellations. A listing of park phone numbers is available on the DNR’s website at www.michigan.gov/dnr. Contact information also is provided for each event on the DNR’s GO-Get Outdoors calendar at www.michigan.gov/gogetoutdoors.

One of the canceled events is the lantern-lit cross-country ski event at Bewabic State Park, which was scheduled for Saturday.

β€œThe cold temperatures and wind chill will not only make people uncomfortable,” said Bewabic State Park Supervisor Kasey Mahony, β€œbut also may cause weather-related safety risks and injury.”
