UPDATED: Huron Valley Test Scores Mixed on Michigan Merit Exam

District sees improvement in writing and science, ACT scores drop.

The Michigan Department of Education has released Michigan Merit Exam (MME) scores for the Huron Valley School District. While the district improved in writing and science, the percent of students who were proficient or advanced dropped in reading and social studies.

The MME, according to the department, assesses students in 11th grade based on Michigan high school standards. The test includes the ACT college entrance examination, along with other state proficiency tests.

The district's percent proficient or advanced in writing and science improved slightly when compared to 2010 – from 58 to 60 in writing, and 71 to 73 in science.

But, the percent proficient or advanced in reading and social studies dropped slightly from 75 to 71 in reading, and 85 to 83 in social studies

The mathematics percentage stayed the same at 58, but held above the state's percent who were proficient or advanced at 52.

The overall ACT average score dropped slightly from 20.4 to 20.1 when compared to 2010. This is just slightly higher than the state's 19.3 average. A 36 is the highest a person can score on the ACT.

Gov. Rick Snyder called the statewide results promising on Tuesday in a press release, "Our steady progress is promising, but we can and must do better. I am confident that with our rigorous high school requirements, high quality teachers and the enactment and implementation of key education reforms, this positive trend will continue.”

“Students are being challenged with greater rigor and are achieving at higher levels,” said state Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mike Flanagan in a release. “Michigan educators are to be commended for the efforts they put in to help more students learn and succeed.”
