The Lakeland High School Theatre department has been hard at work to bring a fresh perspective on βPeter Panβ to its stage as this yearβs spring musical. This tale follows Peter, Wendy, John and Michael on their journey through Neverland, as they meet exciting characters. Share a story that brings practical children to a strange and wonderful world where children always stay children, pirates are always bad guys, and believing in magic while clapping can bring fairies back to life!
When asked to describe the musical, senior Alexa Ellish says: βWe worked hard to make sure this is an enjoyable show for all ages so everyone leaves with a smile.β This spring musical is one that keeps the imagination of the audience involved and entertained, with humorous acts that keep you laughing along the way.
The cast consists of fifty students from both Lakeland High School and the International Academy West. Each and every one of these students has been working hard beginning in mid-December, rehearsing for a show that will keep the audience at awe until the very end. Peter Pan actor, Beth Hendrickson, adds, β βPeter Panβ is a timeless tale that anyone, no matter how grown up, can enjoy. We have worked really hard to put on this show and it has come together wonderfully. Expect some really cool effects and tricks that will bring out the child in everyone.β
Thirty students make up the showβs production crew, some of whom are also actors. Each member brings a different skill to the stage that is crucial to the success of the production as a whole. Director and Lakeland teacher, Ms. Karen Miller, says, βIt is important to me that students have direct investments in this show β everything you see on stage has been designed, created, and run by students.β
This yearβs season is βWonderβ and focuses on human experiences. On one hand, wonder describes the amazed discovery of things new and astounding. We also associate wonder with childhood and the nostalgic memories of our past. As a culture, we tend to lose the experience of βwonderβ as we lead busy lives consumed with schedules; working overtime; TV, computer, and phone screens, and stress. How often do we look to the stars, to the skies, to the natural wonders around us? Wonder is looking at the world with a fresh, open attitude. Creativity, optimism, and imagination β these are the themes we have been exploring this year. This classical, family-friendly production features brave choreography, a student orchestra, a real-life Mastiff as Nana, and students FLYING across the stage!
